-How do they relate to my topic of interest?

Wangari Maathai was a very determined person who was set to reach their goals. She was an environmentalist. She wanted to get rid of pollution as much as I did. She did as much as she could and achieved a very big goal and got even further before she died in 2011. I look up to her and hope to achieve as much as she did and more.

-Some background about the person's life

Wangari is from Ihithe, Kenya. She was born April 1st, 1940. She grew up in a small village. Her father was able to provide for the family by working as a tenant farmer. In this moment of time she was still a British colony. Her family decided that she would go to school, it was very uncommon for women and girls to go to school at this time. She went to a local primary school when she was about 8 years old. Being very intelligent and an incredible student, she continued her education to high school and college. After school she returned to Kenya, and studied veterinary anatomy. She made history in 1971. She became the first woman to earn a doctorate degree. She also became the first woman to chair a university department in the region in 1976. She wanted to save Kenya’s forests and lands from the destruction caused by development and remedy the negative impact that it had on the environment. She launched the Green Belt Movement to restore her forests and land by planting over 30 million trees. Her most famous action was when she protested in Nairobi’s Uhuru park to stop the construction of a skyscraper. Her act drew attention, and the plan eventually happened. The place in the park where she demonstrated was titled “Freedom Corner.”

Maathai impacted history by doing many things, that includes: becoming the first woman to earn a doctorate degree, becoming the first woman to chair a university department in the region in 1976, and planting over 30 million trees to save forests and lands, and in 2004 she became the first woman to win a nobel prize. She became quite famous and changed history by making lots of big differences.

-What did this person notice in the world around her or him?

Wangari Maathai noticed how people were always destroying habitats and cutting down trees that were important to where she lived. She took action in this and decided that she would do the bets she could to try and save Kenya. And she did. She launched the Green Belt Movement which grew very famous and had planted over 30 million trees in Kenya and saved it.

-What were this person's goals

Maathai wanted to keep the Earth and her environment as safe as possible, her goal was to launch any kind of movement or company that saved the environment and Kenya and kept it away from possible danger and even deaths. It also damaged the animals that lived in her forest and in the ecosystem. Her goals were to keep Kenya safe and save her environment.

-What choices did this person make that made the most impact?

Maathai decided that she would protest and stop a skyscraper from being built in Nairobi’s Uhuru park and it drew lots of attention to the area. People started protesting with her and she became very famous, that's also when she decided to start the Green Belt Movement and plant trees to make a huge impact on where she lived and help the society and ecosystem there.
